This disk contains two terminal programs, plus four file programs
to compress and uncompress files on Bulletin Boards. The terminal
programs are both quite small, and are suitable for installing on a
customized Workbench disk.
All these files are either shareware or PD (Public Domain)
programs.
The disk contents are:
AVCTERM - A very small but excellent terminal program, which can
handle both monochrome and ANSI characters. The transfer protocols
are X-modem (checksum and CRC), WX-modem which is a speciality
protocol (rarely used), and Punter C1 protocols. Punter C1 has a
slight timing problem, and it will NOT work properly with the IBM
version of Punter BBS's. AVCTERM uses a seperate program to edit the
phone number file. Use 'ED', or an ASCII word processor, that doesn't
use strange characters in the file. I have used both Transcript (Gold
Disk), and Scribble!, to edit the file.
Handshake - A terminal program that has X-modem (checksum and CRC),
Y-modem (batch and single file), and Kermit protocols. This program
can also emulate VT-52, VT-102, and VT-220 (two versions) systems.
This program can also handle colour and monochrome BBS's. This
program contains it's own phone directory editting program. A simple
but excellent terminal program, that has numerous features such as
auto-redial.
A quick note on transfer protocols. X-modem transfers files in 128
byte blocks, this makes file transfers relatively slow, but on noisy
telephone lines, it can become the protocol of choice as the error
checking is done in small blocks. This means that a retransmitted
block of data is faster. Y-modem, transfers data in 1024 byte blocks,
thus an error in a transferred block, will take longer to retransmit
that block of data. The final transfer protocol I will mention is
Kermit, there is no error checking until the complete file has been
transferred, and if the data has an error, the whole file has to be
retransmitted. The one advantage of Kermit, is that the file transfer
can be resumed without having to retransmit the complete file!
Utilities
The files in this drawer compress and uncompress transferred files.
Files are made smaller and a program that contains more than one file
can be grouped in the compressed file.
ARC - One of the most popular in the past, it is used on BBS's.
File compression is not that great, and files are limited to a
maximum of eight characters (________.ARC). Sometimes a file usely
called 'Execute_me' or 'ExecuteMe' will be found in the compressed
file. Using the 'Execute' command from the 'C' directory will change
the file names to their proper size. Entering the command ARC, will
provide you with a small help screen. The CLI/Shell must be used!
ZOO - a program similar to ARC, file compression isn't as good as
ARC, but larger filenames can be used. Zoo also has a help screen, by
just entering the program name. The CLI/Shell must be used.
LHARC - for .LZH files, better compression factors are possible.
Documentation is included.
PKAZIP - v1.01. This program uses pull down menus, slight
modifications of the Work Bench (by adding two files) must be made.
To create a .ZIP file, upper case characters must be used.
Documentation is included.
DMS - a brand new program that replaces Warp (.WRP). I haven't seen
any files yet, so that a proper evaluation of this program of this
program is not possible. Read the documentation for more information.
VirusX - though this program is not a terminal program, or a file
utility, it is a virus checking utility. Created by a well known,
Amiga programmer, it checks for many of the types of virus that makes
it way around the Amiga community.
